Steelers wire usa today12/23/2023 Stands to reason if he didn't find that amount acceptable in 2018 he won't in 2019 either. It's either around $25 million -the QB tag- or its $14.5 million again. The only real issue is whether the Steelers would be interested in franchise-tagging Bell a third time. For Bell that would put his transition tag value at $14.5 million, which was the value of his second franchise tag, not coincidentally what would have been his 2018 salary. The judgment likely will have to be determined in court or by an arbitrator.Īs for the transition tag, whether he shows up or not, the value of the tag is either the average of the top 10 at his position or 120 percent of his previous year's salary, with the caveat that if he didn't have a salary the previous year, it's in his last year of service. Bell will argue the specific rule addressing the tag says designated, which is a formal distinction. Should the Steelers wish to franchise tag him in 2019, The league will argue Bell would be on his second. At the same time, rules also say this year basically doesn't count for anything if his rights were held but did not play at all and was never on IR (like Martavis Bryant when he was suspended). He never signed his second tag but that's not spelled out in the rule. Bell was designated twice as the Steelers franchise player. The CBA says if a player is "designated" the team's franchise player for a third year he's eligible basically for the highest position tag, (or two other options and the player gets the highest of the three). By rule, his contract tolls (ie rolls into next year). His year of service does not accrue toward his pension. If he does not show up, he is not eligible to play this season. Steelers still hold same rights to franchise or transition tag they always did. He gets credit for the year for his pension (already reached level for UFA). If he shows up, he gets paid per game assuming the Steelers put him on the active roster (perhaps not surprising Samuels and Ridley got involved a tad earlier than mop-up duty). Give us a shutdown secondary to go with Haden and we win the SB. We have a lot of strong pieces on defense with the DL. We have the pieces we need on offense (arguably best WR1 and WR2 in league, arguably best OL in league, amazing young RB, top 5-10 depending on the game QB). Give me a guy like Peterson for a 1st and change and I'd be thrilled. We can't really afford to draft and pray and develop at DB. Haden isn't going to be saving that secondary forever. Davis is good but probably is what he is in his 3rd year now. You have to go back to 2007 and William Gay for our last strong DB draft pick. Our draft picks in the last 10 years to find a DB:Įdmunds (1), Marcus Allen (5), Sutton (3), Brian Allen (5), Burns (1), Davis (2), Golson (2), Grant (4), Holliman (7), Shaq Richardson (5), Shamarko Thomas (4), Hawthorne (5), Frederick (7), Curtis Brown (3), Cortez Allen (4), Keenan Lewis (3), Burnett (5), Mundy (7). The other guys have been less than useless. Edmunds is a rookie and hopefully turns it around but he just hasn't looked that good this year. He's #21 ranked PFF safety and is solid in coverage.ġ good hit in 4 years when we've spent so many high picks.
